Our work: Education Policy and Systems Change

The National Student Support Accelerator

Launched by a community of education experts and scholars from across the country, the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) conducts research and develops practical tools to advance relationship-based, personalized instruction in K-12 education. From high-impact tutoring to broader student support strategies, NSSA provides research-backed resources for schools, districts, and education service providers to implement evidence-based approaches that center strong relationships and accelerate learning at scale.

Overview

Research shows that high-impact tutoring — tutoring delivered three or more times a week by consistent, trained tutors using quality materials and data to inform instruction — is one of the most effective academic interventions. High-impact tutoring  provides an average of more than four months of additional learning in elementary literacy and almost 10 months in high school math. But low-income students have rarely had access to the kind of intensive tutoring that could improve their learning trajectories, and previous efforts to scale up tutoring initiatives have not been successful in maintaining quality or reaching enough children who need support.

The National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) is devoted to translating promising research about what works in personalized, relationship-centered instruction into actionable strategies for schools, districts, and service providers. Since its launch in March 2021, NSSA has led the development of high-impact tutoring standards and built a community of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers focused on expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based supports. As education leaders increasingly seek the benefits of high-impact tutoring and as research on effective implementation continues, more students across the country receive the support they need to thrive.

To date, the NSSA team has conducted or is actively engaged in over 60 research studies, published over 40 tools and briefs, and provided strategic advising for hundreds of districts, cities, states, tutoring providers, and federal education institutions. NSSA has also informed statewide programs and policies in Florida, Michigan, and Oregon related to tutoring and personalized support; and states including New Jersey, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Montana cited NSSA research and tools by name in their statewide education resources.
